This requirement is subject to the PhD exemptions permitted under the applicable University Grants Commission regulations.

The official notification refers to the UGC regulations governing the award of M.Phil./PhD degrees, including the 2009 and 2016 regulations and subsequent amendments.

Negative Marking Rule

Each correct answer carries 3 marks. For every incorrect answer, 1 mark will be deducted. If a candidate marks more than one option for a question, it will also be dealt with according to the incorrect-answer rule.

Because one-third of the marks available for a correct response are effectively lost on a wrong response, candidates should avoid uncontrolled guessing and concentrate on accuracy.

  • General Knowledge: 30 questions / 90 marks
  • Concerned Subject: 90 questions / 270 marks

The detailed subject-wise syllabus is made available by UPESSC separately. Candidates should study only the syllabus applicable to the subject selected in the application form.

For the General Knowledge portion, candidates can strengthen preparation through daily current affairs, Static GK and the daily current affairs quiz.

UPESSC Assistant Professor Written Exam Preparation Strategy

The concerned subject contributes 270 of the 360 written marks, equivalent to 75% of the written examination. Candidates should therefore devote most of their preparation time to their postgraduate/NET-level subject syllabus.

  • Study the official subject syllabus unit by unit.
  • Prepare concise revision notes for key concepts and theories.
  • Solve NET/SET and Assistant Professor-level objective questions.
  • Reserve regular preparation time for General Knowledge.
  • Practise 120-question mock tests under the two-hour limit.
  • Use negative-marking practice to improve answer selection.
  • Prioritise accuracy instead of attempting every doubtful question.

UPESSC Assistant Professor Interview 2026

Candidates shortlisted on the basis of the written examination will be called for interview according to the rules prescribed by the Commission.

The interview carries 40 marks. Candidates must appear with the required original documents and prescribed self-attested copies for verification.
