HPPSC HPAS Recruitment 2026 Selection Process
The H.P. Administrative Service Combined Competitive Examination-2026 is conducted through three main stages:
- Screening / Preliminary Examination
- Main Written Examination
- Personality Test
The Preliminary Examination is a screening stage and its marks are not added to the final merit. Candidates qualifying the Preliminary Examination are shortlisted for the Main Examination. The notification provides for approximately 20 times the total number of vacancies to be admitted to the Main Examination, subject to the Commission's rules and equal-score conditions.
After the Main Examination, candidates are shortlisted for the Personality Test. The number called for the Personality Test is generally up to three times the number of advertised vacancies, subject to candidates obtaining equal qualifying marks.
Final merit is prepared using the marks obtained in the merit-counting papers of the Main Examination together with the Personality Test. Marks in the compulsory English and Hindi qualifying papers are not counted for final ranking.
HPPSC HPAS Preliminary Exam Pattern 2026
The Preliminary Examination contains two objective-type multiple-choice papers. Each paper carries 200 marks and has a duration of 2 hours. Candidates must appear in both papers.

HPPSC HPAS Recruitment 2026 Preparation Focus
The Preliminary Examination requires a different strategy from examinations where both papers contribute equally to merit. General Studies Paper-I drives the screening merit, while the Aptitude Test is qualifying with a minimum requirement of 33%. Candidates should therefore ensure that they comfortably clear Paper-II while directing a larger share of serious preparation toward General Studies.
The one-third negative marking makes accuracy important. Random guessing can reduce the effective score, so candidates should build a question-selection strategy around confidence, elimination and time management rather than attempting every question blindly.
Himachal Pradesh-specific history, geography, culture and socio-economic development form an important part of the General Studies syllabus. Candidates should combine state-specific preparation with national current affairs, polity, economy, environment and general science. Regular use of daily current affairs, revision through Static GK and practice with a daily current affairs quiz can help strengthen recall for the objective stage.
For the Main Examination, answer-writing practice should begin well before the Preliminary Examination result. Essay and three General Studies papers together contribute 700 merit marks, while the selected optional subject contributes another 200 marks. Candidates should therefore choose the optional subject carefully and build a sustainable revision and answer-writing plan.
