Introduction
Questions on the locations of India's premier institutes are among the safest marks available in any general awareness paper. Examiners like them because the answer is factual, has no ambiguity, and can be framed in many ways: which state has a particular IIT, which city hosts the oldest IIM, which was the first NIT in India, or how many AIIMS are functional today. Once you memorise the city and state of each institute, you can answer all of these variations without any calculation or reasoning.
The four biggest families are the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM), the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the National Institutes of Technology (NIT). All of them are Institutions of National Importance (INI), which means Parliament has given them special status, greater autonomy and direct central funding. As of June 2026, India has 173 Institutions of National Importance in total, and the four families above account for 96 of them.
This page organises every institute by generation and by state so that the list is easy to revise rather than just easy to read. Keep it open alongside your notes on Static GK topics for competitive exams, because location-based questions repeat with very little change from one exam cycle to the next.
Core Concepts You Must Understand First
Before memorising the tables, fix these five ideas in your mind. Most wrong answers in this topic come from confusing the concepts below, not from forgetting a city name.
- Institution of National Importance (INI): a public higher education institute given special status by the Constitution or by an Act of Parliament. It gets greater autonomy, its own degree-awarding powers and direct funding from the Government of India.
- Each family has its own Act: IITs run under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961; NITs and IISERs under the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research Act, 2007; AIIMS under the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956; and IIMs under the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017.
- Established year is not always the year it became an IIT or NIT: IIT Roorkee was founded in 1847 but became an IIT only in 2001. NIT Patna traces back to 1886 but became an NIT in 2004. Read the question carefully to see which year is being asked.
- Approved is not the same as operational: around 25 AIIMS have been approved, but only 20 are fully functional and admitting MBBS students. Exams usually ask about operational campuses.
- Some institutes do not carry their family name: six NITs have personality-based names such as MANIT Bhopal and VNIT Nagpur, and two IITs carry a bracketed suffix, namely IIT (BHU) Varanasi and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

All 23 IITs: City, State and Year of Establishment
The IITs are the best known Institutions of National Importance in the country. They were created as centres of excellence in engineering, technology and scientific research, and admission to their B.Tech programmes is through JEE Advanced. For memory purposes it helps to split them into three groups: the seven old IITs, the two converted institutes with bracketed names, and the fourteen new IITs set up between 2008 and 2016.
The Seven Old IITs (1951 to 2001)
| Institute | City | State or UT | Year | Key Features and Exam Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIT Kharagpur | Kharagpur | West Bengal | 1951 | The first IIT in India, set up on the site of the former Hijli Detention Camp. Its first convocation was held in 1956, the same year it was declared an Institute of National Importance. It is the largest IIT campus by area and the reference model for every later IIT. |
| IIT Bombay | Mumbai (Powai) | Maharashtra | 1958 | The second IIT, set up with technical assistance channelled through UNESCO with support from the erstwhile Soviet Union. Located beside Powai Lake and consistently ranked among the top three engineering institutes in NIRF. |
| IIT Madras | Chennai | Tamil Nadu | 1959 | The third IIT, established with West German technical collaboration. It has held the number one rank in the NIRF engineering category for several consecutive years and its campus lies inside a protected deer park. |
| IIT Kanpur | Kanpur | Uttar Pradesh | 1959 | Founded in the same year as IIT Madras with help from a consortium of nine American universities under the Kanpur Indo-American Programme. It was the first institute in India to offer computer science education. |
| IIT Delhi | New Delhi (Hauz Khas) | Delhi | 1961 | Started in 1961 as the College of Engineering with British collaboration and renamed IIT Delhi in 1963 under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963. If a question gives 1963, it refers to the renaming year, not the founding year. |
| IIT Guwahati | Guwahati | Assam | 1994 | The sixth IIT and the first IIT in the North East, set up on the north bank of the Brahmaputra. It was created after a long gap of 33 years following IIT Delhi. |
| IIT Roorkee | Roorkee | Uttarakhand | 1847, IIT in 2001 | Founded in 1847 as Thomason College of Civil Engineering, it is the oldest technical institution in Asia. It became the seventh IIT in 2001 by converting the University of Roorkee, so 1847 and 2001 are both correct answers depending on the wording. |
The Two Converted IITs with Bracketed Names
| Institute | City | State or UT | Year | Key Features and Exam Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIT (BHU) Varanasi | Varanasi | Uttar Pradesh | 1919, IIT in 2012 | Originally the Banaras Engineering College within Banaras Hindu University, founded in 1919. It was upgraded to an IIT in 2012 but remains part of the BHU campus, which is why the abbreviation keeps BHU in brackets. |
| IIT (ISM) Dhanbad | Dhanbad | Jharkhand | 1926, IIT in 2016 | Founded in 1926 as the Indian School of Mines on the lines of the Royal School of Mines, London. It is the only IIT with a historic specialisation in mining and petroleum engineering and became an IIT in 2016. |

All 31 NITs: City, State and Year of Establishment
The NITs are technical institutions focused on engineering and technology, and they are second only to the IITs in academic reputation among government engineering institutes. Most of them began as Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs), which were joint ventures between the Centre and the states started from 1959 during the Second Five Year Plan. All RECs were renamed as NITs in 2002, and the family received Institute of National Importance status through the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007. Admission to B.Tech programmes is through JEE Main.
Older NITs and Former Regional Engineering Colleges (up to 1987)
| Institute (Official Name) | City | State or UT | Year | Key Features and Exam Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NIT Patna | Patna | Bihar | 1886, NIT in 2004 | Traces its origin to the Bihar College of Engineering of 1886, giving it the oldest lineage among all NITs. It became an NIT in 2004 and is among the oldest engineering institutions in India. |
| NIT Raipur | Raipur | Chhattisgarh | 1956, NIT in 2005 | Started as the Government College of Engineering, Raipur in 1956 and converted to an NIT in 2005. It has one of the largest B.Tech intakes among all NITs. |

Central Universities and the Constitutional INIs
- India has around 56 central universities, of which 10 hold Institution of National Importance status.
- Banaras Hindu University (Varanasi), Aligarh Muslim University (Aligarh) and University of Delhi are INIs through Entry 63 of the Union List in the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution, not through a separate Act.
- BHU and AMU were listed at the very commencement of the Constitution, while University of Delhi was added by the 32nd Constitutional Amendment in 1973.
- Other frequently asked central universities include Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia, IGNOU and South Asian University in Delhi, Visva Bharati in West Bengal, Nalanda University in Bihar, Pondicherry University in Puducherry, North Eastern Hill University in Meghalaya and Sindhu Central University in Ladakh.
- Specialised central universities worth noting are Indian Maritime University (Tamil Nadu), Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (Gujarat), National Sports University (Manipur), Rajiv Gandhi National Aviation University (Uttar Pradesh) and English and Foreign Languages University (Telangana).
Memory Tricks and Mnemonics
Location lists are pure recall, so the fastest way to lock them in is with acronyms, contrast pairs and small stories. Use the eight tricks below and revise them once a week rather than reading the full tables again and again.
Trick 1: The Seven Old IITs in Order
The chronological order is Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati, Roorkee. Take the first letters: K B M K D G R.
- Mnemonic sentence: Kind Boys Make Kanpur Delhi Go Round.
- Years to attach: 1951, 1958, 1959, 1959, 1961, 1994, 2001.
- Story anchor: the list starts in Bengal, moves west to Mumbai, drops south to Chennai, climbs to Kanpur and Delhi, jumps east to Guwahati and finishes in the hills at Roorkee. Visualise that zig-zag on a map once and the order stays.
Trick 2: The Six Old IIMs in Order
The order is Calcutta, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore, giving C A B L K I.
- Mnemonic sentence: CAB Le Kar Indore, meaning take a cab to Indore.
- Years to attach: 1961, 1961, 1973, 1984, 1996, 1996.
- Contrast point to remember: the first two share the year 1961, and the last two share the year 1996. Only Bangalore in 1973 and Lucknow in 1984 stand alone.
Trick 3: The Six NITs That Do Not Start With NIT
Six NITs are named after national figures. In the order Bhopal, Nagpur, Jaipur, Prayagraj, Surat, Jalandhar the initials of the names are M V M M S A.
- Mnemonic sentence: My Very Magnificent Mother Served Ambedkar.
- Expansion: Maulana Azad at Bhopal, Visvesvaraya at Nagpur, Malaviya at Jaipur, Motilal Nehru at Prayagraj, Sardar Vallabhbhai at Surat, Ambedkar at Jalandhar.
- Link the person to the place: Malaviya founded BHU but his NIT is at Jaipur, and Motilal Nehru's NIT keeps the old name Allahabad even though the city is now Prayagraj.
Trick 4: The Four Founding Years and the Four Acts
Fix the four first institutes on one number line: 1951, 1956, 1959, 1961.
- 1951 IIT Kharagpur, 1956 AIIMS New Delhi, 1959 NIT Warangal, 1961 IIM Calcutta.
- The gaps are neat: plus five, plus three, plus two. Mnemonic: Kharagpur Doctor Warangal Calcutta, five three two.
- Now the Acts in chronological order: AIIMS 1956, IIT 1961, NIT 2007, IIM 2017. Mnemonic: Ask If NITs Improved, giving A-I-N-I.
- Notice the pleasing coincidence to remember: the NIT Act came in 2007 and the IIM Act exactly ten years later in 2017.
Trick 5: Institute Name Versus Actual City
The single biggest source of wrong answers is an institute whose name does not match the city where it sits. Learn these as pairs.
- NIT Calicut is at Kozhikode, because Calicut is the older name of the same city.
- MNNIT Allahabad is at Prayagraj, the renamed city.
- NIT Puducherry is at Karaikal, not in Puducherry city.
- NIT Uttarakhand is at Srinagar in Pauri Garhwal, not the Kashmiri Srinagar.
- NIT Karnataka is at Surathkal near Mangaluru.
- NIT Nagaland is at Chumoukedima near Dimapur, not at Kohima.
- NIT Sikkim is at Ravangla, not at Gangtok.
- IIM Sirmaur is at Paonta Sahib, since Sirmaur is the district name.
- AIIMS Vijaypur is near Jammu in Samba district, and is popularly called AIIMS Jammu.
- IIT Goa began at Farmagudi in Ponda, while NIT Goa is at Cuncolim.
Trick 6: The Five Three-Institute Cities
No single Indian city has all four of IIT, IIM, AIIMS and NIT. But exactly five cities have three of them, and they are the highest value facts in this whole topic.
- Patna: IIT plus NIT plus AIIMS.
- Raipur: NIT plus IIM plus AIIMS.
- Jammu: IIT plus IIM plus AIIMS, counting AIIMS Vijaypur just outside the city.
- Guwahati: IIT plus IIM plus AIIMS, with Assam's NIT sitting far away at Silchar.
- Nagpur: VNIT plus IIM plus AIIMS.
- Mnemonic for the five: Please Read Just Great Notes, giving P R J G N.
- Two-institute cities worth adding: Indore with IIT and IIM, Tiruchirappalli with NIT and IIM, Kozhikode with NIT and IIM, Shillong with NIT and IIM, Bhubaneswar with IIT and AIIMS, and Jodhpur with IIT and AIIMS.
Trick 7: The Six AIIMS of 2012
After AIIMS New Delhi in 1956, the next six AIIMS all became operational together in 2012 under PMSSY: Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, Rishikesh.
- Initials: B B J P R R. Mnemonic: Big Brothers Join Patna, Raipur, Rishikesh.
- Notice that two start with B and two with R, so you only really have to remember Jodhpur and Patna separately.
- After 2012 the batches are easy: four in 2018, four in 2019, four in 2020 and one in 2021. That is 1 plus 6 plus 4 plus 4 plus 4 plus 1, which equals 20.
Trick 8: Counting Trick for the Four Families
Remember the four totals as an ascending and descending pattern: 20 AIIMS, 22 IIMs, 23 IITs, 31 NITs.
- Mnemonic: Medicine 20, Management 22, Technology 23, National 31. Alphabetically AIIMS comes first and it also has the smallest number, which makes it easy to anchor.
- The three numbers 20, 22 and 23 are almost consecutive, and only the NIT figure of 31 breaks away. If you remember that NITs are the largest family among the four, you will not mix them up.
- Add the smaller families in descending order: 25 IIITs, 7 IISERs, 7 NIPERs, 5 NIDs, 3 SPAs, 2 NIFTEMs. Note that IISERs and NIPERs share the same count of seven.
Additional Notes
Frequently Confused Facts
- First NIT versus NIT Rourkela: the first Regional Engineering College and therefore the first NIT is NIT Warangal, 1959. Several study notes wrongly credit NIT Rourkela, which came in 1961. If the question asks for the first NIT, the answer is Warangal.
- First IIT versus oldest institution: the first IIT is Kharagpur, 1951, but the oldest institution that is now an IIT is Roorkee, founded 1847 and converted in 2001.
- IIT Delhi 1961 or 1963: it began as the College of Engineering in 1961 and was renamed IIT Delhi in 1963. Both years are correct for different questions.
- IISc is not an IIT: the Indian Institute of Science at Bengaluru was founded in 1909 and is a separate institute. It appears in GATE brochures alongside IITs, which is what causes the confusion.
- NITIE is no longer an NIT: the National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai was renamed IIM Mumbai in 2023. Older lists that include NITIE among the NITs are outdated, which is why the NIT count is 31 and not 32.
- NIST is not an Indian institute: the National Institute of Standards and Technology is a United States federal agency. Do not place it in any Indian city in an exam answer.
- NIFT full form: it is the National Institute of Fashion Technology, not the Indian Institute of Fashion Technology.
- Bilaspur versus Bilaspur: AIIMS Bilaspur is in Himachal Pradesh. Chhattisgarh also has a city called Bilaspur, but the state's AIIMS is at Raipur.
- Bathinda versus Jodhpur: AIIMS Bathinda in Punjab stands in a locality named Jodhpur Romana, which is unrelated to AIIMS Jodhpur in Rajasthan.
- Two Srinagars: NIT Srinagar is in Jammu and Kashmir, while NIT Uttarakhand is at Srinagar in Pauri Garhwal district.
- Guwahati has three but not four: IIT, IIM and AIIMS are all at Guwahati, but Assam's NIT is at Silchar in the Barak valley.
- IIT (BHU) versus BHU: IIT (BHU) Varanasi is an IIT under the Institutes of Technology Act, while Banaras Hindu University is a central university that is an INI through the Constitution's Seventh Schedule. They share a campus but are distinct entities.
- Approved versus operational AIIMS: about 25 are approved but only 20 are operational. Darbhanga, Awantipora, Rewari, Manipur, Karnataka and Kozhikode are still coming up.
- Entrance exam mapping: JEE Advanced for IITs, JEE Main for NITs, CAT for IIMs, NEET UG for AIIMS MBBS, INI CET for AIIMS postgraduate, GATE for M.Tech and IIT JAM for M.Sc.
Repeating PYQ Patterns
- SSC CGL, CHSL and MTS: the most common format is a straight one-liner such as which state hosts a named IIT or AIIMS, or which was the first institute of a family. Warangal, Kharagpur, Calcutta and New Delhi appear again and again.
- IBPS PO, Clerk and Insurance exams: these papers treat new institutes as current affairs. IIM Guwahati in 2026 is the kind of fact that will be asked as the newest IIM or as Assam's first IIM. Pair this with your daily current affairs revision so that new campuses do not slip through.
- RRB NTPC, Group D and ALP: Railway papers favour founding years and first institutes, especially IIT Kharagpur 1951, AIIMS New Delhi 1956 and the Nehru connection with NIT Warangal in 1959.
- UPSC Prelims: direct location questions are rare. UPSC prefers the framework layer, such as what Institution of National Importance status means, which Act governs a family, or which scheme drove the AIIMS expansion. The answer to that last one is the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana.
- State PSC exams: expect questions on institutes located inside the state, so a Bihar aspirant should be able to name IIT Patna, NIT Patna, AIIMS Patna, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIIT Bhagalpur, NIPER Hajipur and Nalanda University without hesitation.
- Defence exams such as NDA, CDS and AFCAT: these use the same location one-liners as SSC, often mixed with headquarters of research bodies like ICAR, NIO and ISI.
Quick Insight
This topic is unusual in Static GK because it keeps moving. India crossed 173 Institutions of National Importance in June 2026, and the newest entry, IIM Guwahati, was inaugurated only on 14 February 2026 with an allocation of around Rs 555 crore and mentoring from IIM Ahmedabad. On the medical side, the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana continues to add capacity, with AIIMS Darbhanga and AIIMS Rewari expected to scale their clinical courses in the coming years while AIIMS Madurai still runs from a temporary campus. Internationally, the IIT brand has begun to travel, with IIT Madras opening a campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania and IIT Delhi opening a campus in Abu Dhabi, both of which have already appeared in general awareness sections.
The practical takeaway is simple: memorise the stable core of the list once, then update only the newest additions every few months. Reinforce the recall by attempting a Static GK quiz on Indian institutes after each revision, because retrieval practice works far better on location lists than passive rereading. If your target exam has a heavy banking general awareness section, combine this topic with your banking awareness notes, since institute-related questions often sit in the same block as headquarters and scheme questions.
